The Order of Friars Minor (OFM) or simply Friars Minor is an Order of religious men, Brothers and Clerics who have dedicated their life to follow Jesus Christ through the example of St. Francis of Assisi. It is one of the religious congregations that form St. Bonaventure University College. The advent of Friars Minor in Zambia probably dates from the late 1980s or early 1990s when they first situated themselves in Livingstone. With the shifting of St. Bonaventure College from Livingstone to Lusaka, the Friars also re-situated themselves to Lusaka as most of the brothers were pursuing their philosophical studies in the college as well as receiving religious formation.
To fulfill their charism, the Friars strive to live a life of Brotherhood in a fraternity, also through prayers, devotion, evangelization and studies. Since the opening of the college in Lusaka, the Friars have been staying at the Portiuncula Friary within the college. Currently, Friars Minor at St. Bonaventure University College belong to four distinct entities or jurisdictions. These entities include; the Province of St. Francis which has members from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Malawi; the Province of Our Lady Queen of Peace which covers South Africa and Lesotho; the Custody of St. Clare, Mozambique and the Custody of Good Shepherd, Zimbabwe. Although the Friars are present in Zambia, they have no Zambian Friars as per now. This implies that all OFM brothers at the moment are missionaries. As Mathew 22:14 says: “Many are called but few are chosen.”
Religious life is an option for you. Peace and All Good!
